I don't like the site that this piece of news was found on. The article is surrounded by awful art and the website doesn't look that trustworthy.

However:
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2011/03/29/shogakukan-bans-fan-art/

Am hoping it is just an elaborate April Fools of poor taste. Looking for fandom views.

It's so stupid it could actually be true, especially since it is March 31st and not April 1st...

Oh well, now that I'm thinking about it, it is April 1st in Japan so that I do hope that it is just a joke.

The article is dated the 29th. :/

I just noticed it after posting the comment. But then they could have posted the article later and change the date. Hmmm...

Anyway, it seems almost real. Fanart and fanfics have always been illegal in Germany. But nobody seems to mind as long as you don't make any profit.

Japanese people don't really know April fools + I read the article in japanese and the english translation is correct.

But maybe everybody is right about it. I overreacted and there won't be any trouble for the english or other european fandoms...

Have googled it and found journal entries on March 28th 2011 about the fanart ban which links back to Sankakucomplex. That's strange since the date on the Sankakucomplex site is March 29th, but that could be a result of the posters belonging to two different time zones. Anyway, now it doesn't seem like an April Fools anymore.

On the other hand, it could be an attempt of Shogakukan to draw the attentions of the public to its name and to renew the interest of the fanbase. Whenever you forbid people to do something without being able to threaten them seriously, they are most likely to do the things you've told them not to do. XD

I hope it is the latter indeed: a mere publicity stunt with no shove behind except maybe directed at the doujinshi market (which I would understand as being perceived as a direct threat, both as competition and with the Mayor of Tokyo pushing through anti-erotic manga laws that could make any association with such things unpalatable. *sigh*)

Hopefully this will change very little in the long run. Is just a question of waiting to see I guess.

Yes, maybe they only try to prevent people from selling those ultry-erotic and really tasteless doujinshi and fanart.I hope that it doesn't change anything for us, too, since we are not making any profit with it. And if the fanfiction.net moderators become paranoid and take down our fics, we can still post them on LJ. (Now that I'm thinking of this, I really need to save my own fics before this happens. XD)

Well, I can only tell you that the screencap and translation is real, as it is on Shôgakukan's website as well. (-> here) ._.

I... have no idea. I mean, how would that even work to forbid reviews? Or even short summaries? I can understand that they forbid pictures to be taken or altered and most other stuff, as that's basically what the "All rights reserved. No reproduction or republication without written permission." already tells anyone who bothers to scroll down the page, so most of those "new rules" seem just like a more detailed version of what should already be well-known. (Or probably even all of them, idk.) I'm just surprised that they feel the need to put more emphasis on the details of the whole copyright business all of a sudden, because to respect all of those rules to a t would very much mean the death of Fandom. And how could that ever work out to their advantage I wonder?

Agreed. Makes me wonder what japanese fandom is thinking about this.
